Will a German mobile phone work in Kenya?

by Stella Kiende
(Germany)

Can I buy a mobile phone in Germany which also works in Kenya?

Can I buy just any phone or do I have to have a specific one?

Many thanks.

Cellphones in Kenya

Hiya and totally agree with Irene - When you get yourself organised just get a simcard for a local operator - I use Safaricom - and your phone will be up and working in seconds. Forget about the roaming expense that your own German provider will offer as it will cost you a lot.

Regards

mobile in Kenya
by: Irene O.

When you are in Kenya you can use your mobile with a kenyan provider simcard. This is much cheaper then keeping your German provider.
Safari com, Vodaphone, or Kencell. Sending sms to Europe 10 ksh. Calling about 40 ksh. But your mobile should not have a simlock cause then you cant use it. ( unlock first)

When I call Kenya from the Netherlands then I use a special service number and can call for 13 euro cent per minute to Kenya. Dont know they have such service numbers in Germany too. Check the internet.

Hope this information helps you

Mobile phones in Kenya
by: Arjen (webmaster)

Yes, your German mobile phone will normally work in Kenya, because Kenya has the same mobile phone network (GSM 900 system) as Europe.

It's only North Americans and all others who use a different system (GSM 850 or GSM 1900) that need to take special measures (like buying a tri-band phone that can use all three GSM systems mentioned).

You should ask your telecom provider to be 100% sure - for example, in the Netherlands you need to have a subscription (not a pre-payed phone) to be able to use it in Africa.

And calling is very expensive, of course, that's why I use SMS (text) a lot when traveling abroad.
