Learning Kimeru by: Paul
Hi Phillip,
I come from Meru and speak the different sub-dialects of Ki-Imenti, Ki-Mwimbi and Gi-Chuka. Surprised? Its true within the Meru language there are about 8 Dialects. Gi-Tigania and K-Igembe are found on the North-East extents, Ki-Tharaka and Ki-Muthambi are found in the South West.
The Webster' English to Tharaka puzzle is a place you want to start at. I have some simple books that introduce you to the language but are not designed as such to learn the language. They are in a series called TKK which is several Mt. Kenya region languages stand for" Tujifunze Kusoma Kikwetu" or "Twirute Kuthoma (K)Gigwetu" This translation can be understood in Ki-Embu, Kikuyu and by some in Kikamba.
My father co-authored some fo the books.

Kimeru language by: Archie Melrose
Philip,
You dont make it easy for us do you? Having spent an hour or so reading about Meru history and their wanderings either from North, South, East or West ending up on the slopes of Mount Kenya I am still none the wiser when it comes to your answer.
It seems that Kikuyu language is the most similar to Kimeru and can be understood either way. However I guess that local dialects will differ.
Wikipedia offers some great historical articles about the Meru people and how they escaped oppression by parting the waters and walking into freedom while their pursuing oppressors were drowned. Sound familiar?
Other researchers offer many different explanations regarding the existence of the Meru, such as expansion from Lake Victoria, movements from Tanzania and similarly from Manda[Lamu] on the coast.
Not sure this helps but it was a good lesson for me.
Kind Regards and good fortune in your quest.
Archie

Where to learn the Meru language? by: Arjen (webmaster)
Hi Philip, I'm not sure about this but I suspect it will be difficult although not impossible to learn the Meru language.
I can't imagine that there isn't some academic text somewhere on the Meru language, so I would first look for that and try to get some formal knowledge about the structure and grammar, etc.
At least I found this reference to a Meru-Swahili-English lexicon: Rubanza, Yunus I. (2008). Kimeru: Msamiati wa Kimeru-Kiswahili-Kiingereza na Kiingereza-Kimeru-Kiswahili / Meru-Swahili-English and English-Meru-Swahili Lexicon. ISBN 9987691196. Find through Amazon or elsewhere.
Then, you would need to practice so I would try to find a Meru person who could help you with that.
