Poor? by: Archie Melrose
Tegan,
Sorry about the late reply but I have been going through the older questions to make sure they have been covered.
Cassandra gave a good reply to highlight that areas of Kenya you may think are 'poor' are not always the same as other areas as inner cities etc.
Please bear in mind that there is a movement of young people from the outer areas of Kenya to the nearest town or city hoping to find their pot of gold. It doesnt always work out and then they become poor.
If you ever travel to Kenya then you can see for yourself the divide between those that make a pound a day [120ksh] and those that do not. Let me tell you that 120ksh will buy at least one hot meal, so when the tourists give a tip to whoever they should remember that.
Kind Regards

Turkana would be in Kenya, but again you would have to describe both absolute and food poverty to be able to give a better analysis

Poor by: Cassandra Maire
Hello,
I would say there are many pockets of areas that are poor even with areas that do not "look" poor.....they could be right outside a city for a town. There really poor of the poorest places were listed by the other posts.
Just be careful how you word poorest. There are many areas that could be labeled poorest but the reality of it is...it is all over Kenya in "poor" areas, slums, and villages.

Poorest regions in Kenya by: Arjen (webmaster)
According to UNDPP research from 2007, of Kenya's eight provinces, the poorest are North Eastern Province and Eastern Province.
Recently Kenya's newspaper the Daily Nation published research about the poorest and richest constituencies in Kenya. The top 5 poorest were:
1. Turkana Central (97% of people are poor)
2. Turkana South (96%)
3. North Horr (95%)
4. Saku (94%)
5. Wajir North (93%)
In Kenya, the 8 provinces are each divided in districts, which are again divided in constituencies. You can find a list of all of them here:
