all kinds of jobs by: Arjen (webmaster)
Some further answers: people who work in agriculture, often work in coffee and tea farming (Kenya is big in both, and the quality is good), and recently also in the flower growing industry. Kenya is exporting flowers to my country, which has a big flower industry itself... Tourism is a big sector too. Many Kenyans start a company in this sector because foreign tourists have more money to spend (but the competition may be high from what I see). Kenya also has a large harbour (Mombasa) that's importing goods and transfering them all over East Africa.
For the rest, there are often the same jobs as in the West (especially in Nairobi and other big cities): shop and bank employees, taxi drivers, real estate agents, airline crew (Kenya Airways), performing musicians, hair dressers, web designers, journalists (Kenya has better newspapers than their neighbors), politicians (well, is that work ;-) ), garbage men... The only difference is that, as the economy is less developed than e.g. Europe, relatively (much) more people work in agriculture.
Globalisation means economies everywhere start to look more and more the same... Globalisation is a big chance to make the world a better place, IF developing countries grab the chances they have with both hands, AND if the rich countries start paying fair prices (fair trade) for stuff they buy from poorer countries.

Two Common Jobs by: Cassandra Marie
Hello,
There are many jobs that need to be done in any country. Kenya is no different but there are two jobs that are common professions for most Kenyans. They are working with live-stock and agriculture. Both are wildly use over the country and is a larger employer of many Kenyans.
As stated before there are many jobs that are needed and done in every country but in Kenya most people have skills in or work in live-stock or agriculture. And there are many job under these categories with some relation to one or both.
Hope this help you get a glimpse of a common and vast field of employment in Kenya.

Making a Living in Kenya by: Archie Melrose
There are so many answers to your question I do not think I have enough space.
I can only compare it to Cayman Islands and I have been there a few times. In Nairobi there are the high rise hotels and apartments, the vigorous tourist industry, supermarkets and grand housing estates where villas stand in secure isolation. Building does not seem to stop.
Of course behind the expensive facade there are the shanty towns where water/drainage and day to day living is hard. The quality of life is minimal and as each generation grows up the lack of education, good health and family stability is all too apparent.
As the Kenyans from the rest of the country migrate to the city in search of a better life the slums grow. So what does a Kenyan citizen do?
Try to earn some money selling postcards to tourists?
Try to earn some money on the side of a highway selling fruit?
Try to pay for college to get a qualification for beauty salon, tourism or end up working in some nightclub or restaurant with a wage that is barely enough to feed one mouth?
I am not sure if this answers your question but there is a big divide in Kenya between susbsistence level of life and those who have plenty. Everyone is trying to survive and if you have cash in hand then it will open doors.
I sound cynical and gloomy but in reality the vibrant spirit of Kenya and its population will turn this country around. It may take years but it will come.
