What are good gift ideas for host families in Kenya?

by Melanie
(Washington DC, USA)

My college student daughter leaves soon for a semester study/internship in Kenya. She is with one host family in Nairobi, then another in a rural area, yet to be named. We would appreciate gift ideas for these families that she can take with her, for adults and children. She knows the Nairobi host family has a 12 yr. old girl, 9 yr. old boy, 3 mo. old and 4 adults. Would Obama items (t-shirt, cap, etc. be welcomed by the adults? Soccor balls with hand pumps by children? Art supplies for children? Large picture calendars have been suggested. Really need more ideas for the men and women of these families. She just wants to stock a variety of gifts that are easily packed and generally well received. Thanks in advance for any ideas or tips on customs with host families.

Your gifts
by: Archie [Moderator]

Melanie,

What a wonderful question and thankyou for that. Also thanks to John for his reply. He covered the question with great advice and to be honest anything that your daughter takes will be received with great honour.

However with my experience and wisdom let me make a suggestion or two. Sports tops for the boys or Dads would be awesome...I mean the ones with big numbers on etc. Most Kenyans are crazy about sport but not necessarily USA, more UK football, however any t-shirt is great. The kids would be happy with art books and word puzzles etc. The nearly teens [girls] I would buy smart nickers [packs] easy to buy and pack. As for Mama??? well now heres the big question. Perfume? NO - Jewele
ry? NO - Chockie Bars? NO - Nickers? YES

Not so good for Mama but let me tell you this Melanie - Ask your daughter to take her Mama host down to the local salon and get her hair done, maybe her nails and that would be the best gift in the whole world. It wont cost too much but Mama will feel like a million dollars.

Hope this helps

Archie

Gift Ideas
by: john Lambert

Hi Melanie,
What a wonderful opportunity for your daughter!

I think all the gifts ideas you mention are Appropriate and would be welcomed.
I would also send a picture(s) of you and your family which your host family will appreciate.

Maybe you could make some kind of small collage you could give them. DC, US culture, pets, etc.

Hopefully Archie, Chris, others may have more ideas
on gifts...and, of course you're already giving them
a huge gift- your trust and friendship.

Best Wishes for you and your daughter.
John
