Wema Centre for street children in Mombasa

(Mombasa)
Anyone visiting Mombasa, please take time to visit the Wema Centre to see and appreciate the fine work it is doing for street children.
In our spare time, my wife and I (UK expat in the tea industry of 20 odd years) are volunteers and directors of this very worthy organisation doing its best in very challenging circumstances.
The Wema Centre is an NGO registered by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development as a children's institution. The centre was started in 1993 due to the ever growing problem of street children in the Mombasa region. The centre was started as a home in Likoni for 6 street girls. In 1997 it was moved to Bamburi Utange. Wema has now three sites: one in Thika and two in Mombasa. The outreach work among street children covers 4 districts. All in all Wema has reached over 10,000 street children with outreach, vocational training, education and psychosocial support.
