Using English electric appliance pubs in Kenya without adaptor?

by Susan Burns
(Preston, Lancashire, England)

I've been told you don't need an adaptor to use english hair dryers etc. as Kenya has three pin sockets. Is this right? Many thanks in advance.

Plugs and Adaptors
by: Archie [Moderator]

Susan,

Thanks for your question and I totally agree with all the other answers - However 3 pin or 2 pin is such a nightmare and I solved it with a multi-adaptor which covers everything from American to Asian. Generally Kenya is 3 pin square like UK but you will still encounter 2 pin round.

I am sure I dont have to tell you to be careful but if you decide to buy extension cables on the street then make sure they have a fuse.

Happy Travels

Archie

Voltage and plugs are different things...
by: Arjen (webmaster)

You should distinghuish between two things: the voltage adaptor and the shape of the plug/socket.

The voltage adaptor is only needed if your destination has a different voltage than your home country. Kenya has the same voltage (220-240V) as the UK and the rest of Europe (but not North America, which has 110V). Plus, charging your camera or mobile phone is often also possible with a different voltage (but check the manual first!).

But when the voltage is the same, the plugs can still be different so your plug doesn't fit their socket. The Kenyan plugs are the same as in the UK, though - the 3-pin system.

I once bought a small plug adaptor which fits 95% of plugs in the world. You can buy it for $10, it's a simple small plastic thing which I've now used on dozens of travels. So if the voltage is the same, or you only bring a mobile phone and camera anyway, you're covered most of the time.

Mains electricity sockets in Kenya
by: Anonymous

Unless the sockets are really old then they will be the same 3 pin type as in the UK. Same voltage and frequency as UK (when the power is actually on) - the supply is can be less than reliable especially in the more remote locations. If they are old sockets then they are the same as old UK ones. You should be OK.

ALWAYS BE PREPARED IN KENYA
by: Cassandra Marie

You may be right but yet you never know. So I would say bring one just in case. The prongs maybe right but what about the wattage. With Kenya or Africa in general you just never know. So I would be like a boy scout and always be prepared.
