Suicide of Ronald Harry Brewer in Nairobi, 1930s

by David Brewer
(York, UK)

I am interested in the publicity surrounding the suicide of my uncle Ronald Harry Brewer born 1911, he worked for the Hudson Bay Company and took his life in the 1930s. He also had an alias of Groth-Brewer. I understand he was married.

Many thanks.

David,

Thankyou so much for your further information regarding your uncle from the '30's who was sent to Kenya to trade furs from Canada with Kenya under the name of the Hudson Bay Company.

You seem to have more information than you are letting on to this forum and perhaps you should be contacting a reliable Kenyan archivist who can do research for you.

Let me suggest the archives of the Kenyan Rotary Club which was set up in 1930 and if your uncle was indeed under delusions of grandeur then I am sure there would have been some record of him there.

Trading in furs? Well publicised? Hudson Bay in Kenya?

WebMaster I appeal to you - pull the plug on this.
Oh I am having a smile.

Kind Regards and much luck with your quest.

It is my understanding that my Uncle was empolyed by the Hudson Bay Company in Canada and had been sent to Nairobi to trade in furs. He had delusions and called himself Sir Groth-Brewer. I am looking for contact, or archive site of the press of the time, as his suicide was well publicied in the 1930s.

Your Question

David,

Thanks for your question and I hope the information you need will be found in some archive or perhaps someones recollection of events 80years ago.

Unfortunately we on this website are all constrained by our own ages, experiences and the searching of the internet. I am sure you have already done that and it would be interesting to hear more from you.

Delving back into the 1930's of Kenya will not be easy as I have just experienced looking for some Brewer connection, but perhaps you could provide some more information. Please bear in mind that this is an Independent Travel Guide website for Kenya [2007-2010].

If you could explain why the Hudson Bay Company should be involved in Kenya then that would help.

Kind Regards

Archie
