Some of the boys at the Interim Care Center
I recently came across an amazing charitable organization in Thika, about an hour's ride north of Nairobi. Action for Children in Conflict is an organization that works with street children and other poor children and families.
I came across them because they offer 1-day tourism opportunities for a small fee, during which they show you around their programs, let you meet and play with some extremely needy and extremely cute children at a care center, and show you a bit of the "real" Kenya.
I absolutely loved my experience, and even decided to volunteer with them for
a little while.
Their website is www.actionchildren.org, and I would strongly recommend it to any traveller as a place to get off the beaten path for a day or half day, see some daily Kenyan life, and do some things that most tourists are not able to do.
Action for Children in Conflict operates an Interim Care Center to rehabilitate street children, a free legal aid service for children and their families, and an outreach center that seeks out vulnerable children from farther afield and does preventative work.
I thought that seeing these programs was a very interesting way to understand some of the social and economic problems in Kenya, and also potential solutions.
To get in touch, you can see their website (above), call 0728774970, or email kenyadirector@actionchildren.org. Enjoy!
