Thankyou for your question and one that has plagued me for various reasons.
Good news - Yes you can smoke in various places especially in some of the better hotels but always outside. Its true you may have to ask for an ashtray at some places but I always watch and assess beforehand whether its viable or not. In Nakuru I have been to one or two night clubs where smoking is permitted as long as you are sensible and do not wander around with a ciggie. Keep it private and to your own space. Common sense and understanding is important. If in doubt then just wait till later or find a quiet place.
I sometimes liken it to flying and when onboard a longhaul I have no need or interest in having a cigarette, and even more so when stuck in a terminal airside and not able to get out. You just accept it and get on.
Hope this helps

Kenyan smoking laws are strict but not sure about daily practice? by: Anonymous
The anti-smoking laws that went into effect in mid 2008 are very strict. You cannot smoke anywhere in public, including restaurants, bars and hotels, and officially you cannot even smoke in your own car or house unless it is sealed and ventilated in the right way.
But, knowing Kenya, I can imagine that not all hotels, bars etc. comply with equal zeal. I don't smoke myself so I don't have first-hand experience with this. But do any other readers know how tough the smoking laws in Kenya are kept in practice? Are citizens walking the streets and bar owners etc. really fined if they smoke anyway?
