Safest and cheapest ways to send parcels to Kenyan NGO?

by Lenka
(London)

We have boxes of books, toys, etc in London for an NGO based in Kisumu. Is there is a reliable cargo company that we can use to send them to Kenya? Thank you.

Kenyan Parcels NEW
by: Anonymous

As many have mentioned it is not the cost of sending that poses the problem but the customs payment on arrival. I recently sent a parcel from Australia not realising this problem and received a distraught message from the recipient as they were demanding more than the parcel was worth. I advise them to return it to me, which they did. Unfortunately no matter which company you use the payment is still an issue, very sad, but no way around it other than delivery in person!

Shipping parcels

I have found that shipping parcels to anywhere in the world has become a lot cheaper by using a company called Parcelbroker. They bulk buy from couriers like DHL and they pass the savings onto the customers
For a country like Kenya, you would also have to pay customs duty, so somehow you need someone to do that at the other end

parcels sent to Kenya

Dear Lenka,

Any courier is quite expensive to use for sending items which can be very heavy like books but are costing little comparing to the cost of sending...
I always recommend our visitors of our children's home in Kenya to ask other travellers to take them to Kenya. This will not only save cost of sending but also avoid stress with the customs..

The homnes/ charities always end up with paying duties which is many times not affordable for them.

Since you have the books and toys already make sure that if you sent them the school/orphanage or any other charity has money to pay the customs fees.

About DHL Archie is not pointing at 'cheap or fast'but about the conmplications we often face when the goods arrive. Any help of the courier and in this case DHL was highly requested and as Archie mentioned they could not be of any service till the goods left the warehouse.

It is not the issue about the children being happy with the toys and books we all know that.. but about the handling services you need when you do sent goods. I do understand his point of view.

Regards
Irene O.

DHL et al
by: Archie [Moderator]

Lenka,

Thankyou for your question and of course the answers from the other responders.

Regarding the cargo for the children in Kisumu there is probably no alternative than using an International Courier company, much to my disappointment with a previous experience with DHL.

You have to bear in mind that once the cargo arrives in Nairobi it has to go through Customs and Excise and its then that DHL seem to lose all responsibility for it. Once it comes out of the transit warehouse then they pick up the contract with you again but while in the transit warehouse they absolve all responsibility. They really do not make this obvious to you when you are sending it. I wonder how that figures with the insurance you make take out?

I am quite prepared to be corrected on this issue by any DHL rep who wishes to comment in this forum.

Lenka, my suggestion to you would be to get in touch with DHL Senior Management in London and get reassurance in writing, & pictures for their glossy marketing brochures. They have a reputation to maintain worldwide and if your consignment to the children of Kisumu is appealing to their marketing department then I am sure the wheels would move very easily.

My apologies if I sound a little bit critical of DHL, I am sure they do well in other countries but I will not be using them again.

Kind Regards

Archie

PS - I await the responses
