Just to add to Cassandra's reply - Having seen the kids at play in compounds and streets of Nakuru if you buy them a football then its like heaven opened up and God blessed them. If you bought a cricket bat, golf clubs or hockey sticks they would chase you and beat your legs.
It seems that we cannot get away from the football influence and I just wonder if one day USA will have the same fever as the rest of the world.
Let me have a reminisc, way back in the 90's I was driving a truck into Romania with aid after their overthrow of the incumbent government and president. The truck was covered in Scottish stickers and flags and as we negotiated the Hungarian/Romanian border one of the gun-toting guards saw the stickers and his knowledge of football teams [Rangers/Celtic] sailed us through with many hugs and kisses and promises of Johnnie Walker whisky.

Hello,
As it was said before (by Arjen) soccer is the most popular sport in Kenya. Also I have seen track becoming more and more popular in schools and with young men.
A friend of mine is working in Nakuru right now and he is a track coach....he is getting more and more “friends” joining him for his daily runs. The kids at the school are also working on their running skills and starting to compete with other schools in the area. I am not sure if there is more of an interest in track or cross country but there is some excitement over the sport of running in some areas.
There are also some local games that are played but I would not call them sports. I have worked at a school and many of the kids play a game that is very close to "tag". The rules are different but the concept is the same. Also there is a game played with small rocks that is similar to jacks but again very different.
Hope this helps.

Popular sports in Kenya by: Arjen (webmaster)
There are a lot of opportunities in Kenya for hiking, scuba diving, hot air ballooning, etc. But this is done largely by tourists.
Rugby has some popularity in Kenya. Some Kenyans also play golf. Kenya's national cricket team is doing quite well in international competitions, and Kenya's national women's volleybal team is winning a lot in African competitions.
In Lamu along the coast, there's the famous annual dhow race (traditional sailing and fishing ships).
