Paying taxes as a foreign worker in Kenya?

by Suzanne Grobler
(South Africa)

Do you pay tax as a South African if you work on contract in Kenya?

I'm enquiring for a person who will work on a contract in Kenya and will get about $6000 US dollars and about $1100 US dollars for accommodation.

Must he pay tax in Kenya and what percentage?

to pay taxes in Kenya
by: Irene O

When you work in Kenya you must register yourself as an alien. You have to pay taxes that Iam almost sure about. You cant work without a working permit which your employer suppose to organise and pay for.

If SA is your country of domicile and you are still registered there as well you probably have to pay taxes also in SA.

But the taxes you pay in Kenya might be reducted from the ones you have to pay in SA. Otherwise you end up paying double taxes. It is like that here in Europe. But to be sure it is advisable to find out through the Government websites of both Kenya and South Africa.

Good luck

Peronal Tax
by: Archie Melrose

Suzanne,

Thanks for your mail. In my experience having worked around the world it depends on your country of domicile. In otherwords if your home country is SA and you have a house or whatever there then your employer will still deduct tax at the going rate, regardless of where you are in the world.

It would be like me going to work in N.Kenya for one of the oil exploration companies from Scotland and still having to pay UK tax.

I am not sure about Kenya for immigrant/visitor workers and their tax obligations but am sure you can find out on their Government website. I would be interested to find it too.

Regards

Archie
