Oh Carnivores was such a disappointment and certainly not a place to read a book but for people watching its good.
Well prepared by the Internet and other advertising Peris and myself grabbed a taxi from our accommodation in nearby Langata to 'go eat meat'
Perhaps its because I love to sit and enjoy a meal slowly and soak in the atmosphere with good company and conversation that the reality of Carnivore was totally different. I cannot deny that the restaurant was very busy but the 'sit down quick' 'eat quick' 'get out quick' spoiled our night out. It was interesting and different but we will not be going back. Good for big parties but not for singles or couples wanting a romantic evening. I hate being negative but I am sure there will be good reports coming in.
Relaxing, reading and people watching I can recommend the Thorn Tree in the centre of the city. It has history, it has panache and it has humour. When Peris dropped her newly bought engagement ring on the tiled floor the whole restaurant plus waitresses were on their hands and knees searching for it. The view from above was amazing as shuffling bottoms between the tables eventually found the escapee and owner and ring were re-united.

Some of the best Nairobi restaurants by: Arjen (webmaster)
Here are some recommendable restaurants:
- Simmers, at Standard Street, accross the 680 Hotel). They have a nice street-side terrace where businessmen and other locals have lunch or drink a beer. Nice sandwhiches and coffee for lunch. During the day it's quiet and relaxed, in the evenings it's lively (and sometimes a bit wild) with live music.
- Kengeles on Koniange Street (accross the Kenya Comfort Hotel) has great espresso, great English breakfasts and good grilled meat and fish dishes. Professional people often come here. Dancing in the evening, with a DJ and often a live band as well.
- Carnivore is touristy, but still a kind of must when you're in Nairobi for the first time. It's meat, meat and more meat which is grilled on big open fires. Devour all kinds of animals there, including crocodile. They're known for their cocktails as well.
- The River Cafe (which is a cafe-restaurant) has a nice view over a river accompanied with great food. It's a well kept secret, and usually packed with locals. Located near Village Market.
- The Talisman Restaurant in Karen combines a funky design with a relaxed atmosphere, and good food ranging from meat and fish to pasta, vegetarian and Japanese. Beautiful location.
- For the best Indian food, go to Open House in Karen, or Haandi in "The Mall" shopping center in Westlands.
- Havana's in Westlands has been described as a nice Kenyan interpretation of the American interpretation of Cuba. Recommended as a starting place for snacks and drinks on a night out in Nairobi.
