work permits by: Irene O
Dear Kim,
It is like Archie says not a must to be married in Kenya to get a working permit. However to obtain a working permit is not easy. Either your employer must assist with it or you can start your own business but there are many conditions.
There are several classes of permits and if you work for a charity organisation it is possible to get a permit if the organisation apply for you. It is recommended to find out rules and conditions first before travelling to Kenya with the hope to get a permit easily. I have met many Europeans in Kenya who thought to get a permit in a short time but it took them ages...
I wish you good luck and if you have any questions dont hesitate to ask us

Married or Not? by: Archie [Moderator]
Kim,
Thankyou for your question and let me try and help you guys.
First of all it does not matter whether you are married or not. As much as it is important in many countries around the world it does not confer you any special visa work permits in Kenya.
If you take time to have a look at the Kenyan Government website and particularly the areas of visas and immigration you will see that there are certain classes of entry for work visas.
If you want to start a business in Kenya there are requirements. If you have a prospective employer in Kenya then there are more requirements, but please be aware that these employers must satisfy the Kenyan Government that they cannot employ local citizens to fill a job vacancy and then leave it open to incomers.
If you have good qualifications that would meet a need in Kenya then I would go for it in a big way and get married there. Irene [co-moderator] would help you in that respect.
