Luo lover

by Luo lover
(Canada)

I'm a white Canadian who started a relationship with a beautiful young Luo woman on the internet. So in April 2008 I had 2 weeks off between jobs and it was my only chance to go see her in Kenya to decide if we would marry and afterwards to sponsor her for permanent residence in Canada.

Well if you remember April 2008 it was certainly not the best time to be in Kenya!!! There was election related violence and as if that was not enough, the dreaded Mungiki's went on a rampage! So I only stayed one night in her apartment and then we split to a high security hotel with high concrete walls, razor wire and armed guads.

It cost me a bundle but well worth it because I married my sweetheart and she now lives with me in Canada. Of course the security situation being what it was we could not visit all the places we wanted but one day we will return and do that. It's too bad Kibaki is so obsessed with power and had to cheat in the election... which sparked the violence.

As a white 48 year old with a beautiful young 31 year old Kenyan woman I certainly got attention on the street. I have to say though I have never seen so many beautiful women as I did in Kenya.

I hope that one day the political/economic elite in Kenya will stop the corruption and lining their pockets at the expense of the poor in places like Kibera. My wife's salary here in her profession is 10 times higher than it was in Kenya so money is definately being sucked out of the Kenyan economy in secretive corrupt ways.

God bless Kenya!

It's about love and nothing else!
by: Emma

I was happy to read your story of love and i just wanted to comment on the other posts here. Why do some people mention tribe's and about what president you mentioned, your story is not about that it's about love.
I am a Scottish woman who is planning to marry a Kenyan man and move to Kenya to live with him. I don't think it's matters what president caused the horrible deaths of many Kenyan's it's that it happened at all. People should be accepting of each other. Even though poeple are from different tribe's they are also Kenyan at the same time and Kenyan people should stand together and show each other the compassion and love that they deserve.
People make comments like this because they are lacking in themselves.
Enjoy your life with your wife and make the most of the love you share, forget the haters.

Corruption
by: Anonymous

I stand corrected because indeed I did mention Kibaki. But I am not the only one who thinks he cheated in the election and there is no doubt that triggered the violence that killed 1,000 people and displaced thousands more. But whether we talk about Kibaki, Moi or even Odinga...we know in general that there is a culture of corruption in Kenyan politics and it really hurts the average Kenyan.

Corruption in Kenyan politics
by: Luolover

I did not talk about a specific person or President and it is observably true that the political elite is corrupt, that is why Kenya enacted anti corruption legislation, it knows it has a problem...OPEN YOUR EYES !!!

Luo lover, too think that your comments about the president is unfortunate. Don't be hasty to Judge from one side. Iam glad you found love in Kenya but I wish you would stop putting tribal tags

Thanks Mwende
by: Luo Lover

Thanks Mwende for the comment...you're kind and probably more typical of the overall Kenyan mentality than the other racist commenter !

Of course I did not marry a Luo by choice, that was just luck. I think Kenyans should celebrate the different tribal traditions while resisting the temptation to make it a reason for conflict. Cuz you know we are all of the HUMAN tribe so there's no reason to fight !

Racist comments
by: Luolover

You obviously have a bone to pick with Luo's and whites. I got a few dirty looks in Nairobi...from guys like you. But the majority of Kenyans deep down probably don't care about tribes or skin color, you could learn from them.

Canadian Mzungu expert on Kenya
by: Anonymous

Comment No. 1. Maaried to a Luo, your comments about Kibaki dont come as a surprise at all.

Comment No 2. She earns 10 times what she was earning in kenya? Well good for her. But would you be surprised to know that there are Kenyans who earn 5 times what she is getting there in Canada and who wouldnt relocate there for all Mzungu husbands in the world?
