Items from Kenya for school study projecta study?

by Megan Smith
(NY, USA)

My school, P.S. 119, is in Brooklyn, New York. We call our school the Magnet School of Global and Ethical Studies. Every year, each grade studies a different country and we do a large expo in June. In September, my grade will be studying Kenya.

This website has been very helpful. I would like to be able to show the students some real objects from Kenya, such as coins, postcards, maps, etc. And would you have any ideas for activities to do with fourth graders?

If you think you would be able to help out, it would be appreciated greatly.

Thank you for your time,
Megan Smith

Stories.....
by: Cassandra Marie

Hello,
That is so great! When kids learn about other cultures and countries at a young age is something that is priceless. Learning that the rest of the world does not live like the use is a lesson that every student should learn.

I am one of the advisors on the page and have been to Kenya many times. I have stories, photos, and some items I have brought back with me. If you would like to contact the webmaster and leave your email I can try to get it and we can email. I can make a short DVD with some of my stories, photos and show the drums and other items I have. Let me know if that is something you would like.

Webmaster,
can we get her email but not post it on the page for the world to see? :)

Your Project
by: Archie [Moderator]

Megan,

Thankyou for your question and WOW the more I read it the more I realise the enormity of it. I guess in good tutorial fashion you have to start at the very beginning of Kenya history and work through to present day.

Previous questions on this website have touched on the early movements of tribes from all points of the compass. In my own research to answer those questions I have learned so much but its hard to collate all of this information into a teacher's package for 4th Graders in Brooklyn. What we need is a 'mzee'[Swahili - respected elder] to help out. All of us here on the moderator team are relatively young [apart from me] and we react to Kenya as it is now and what we hope for the future for that lovely country.

Are there any teachers / historians out there that can help Megan?

Regards

Archie

ps - Sorry it seems such a lame reply to your question.
