Is November a good time for a Kenya safari?

by S. Shankar
(Dubai, United Arab Emirates)

I am planning to visit Kenya in Nobember. Is this a good time for a safari? I am unfortunately not able to travel before that. Many people have advised me to avoid safari in Kenya in November. Is this true?

Dear Shankar,

Yes in October/ November the migration will be in Tanzania and you will have a nice chance to catch up with it.

Its good to start planning now so as to have the logistics in place i.e itinerary, hotel bookings, immunizations, yellow fever etc.

Thanks and look forward to hearing from you.

Rgds

Peter.

Thanks!

@ Arjen and Peter: thank you very much for your rather encouraging replies. In the meantime, I'd read a travelogue by someone who was describing almost empty camps, indivudual attention etc. 10 safari vehicles around one animal during high season? That sounds rather heartless for the poor animal!
I'm going ahead with my plans for Nov. then, and will probably do a Kenya- Tanzania joint trip, in case I am able to catch the reverse migration in Tanzania then?

Hi Shankar,

As Arjen has explained November is usually accompanied by short rains which means more lush vegetation in the National Parks/ Reserves which is good for the animals, but sometimes it becomes hard to spot the game.

There are those National Parks/ Reserves that are rich in game all year round and ofcourse you will enjoy off season accommodation rates.

Happy travels

Peter

It depends on what you like...
by: Arjen (webmaster)

Hi S., it depends on what you're after. November is in a rainy season (the 'short rains') and while the forests and trees look extra nice then, you may see some less animals on safari as they tend to hide in the bush then.

During the rainy season it certainly doesn't rain all day - it's usually more short outbursts and the temperatures are only a fraction lower (which I think is a good thing!).

Most people visit Kenya in July-August and December-January. Those are the dry periods, and they also coincide with the European and American holidays. It's busier then (in some parks it means 10 safari vans around one lion) and prices of hotels etc. go up.

So November means hotels have a lot of space, lower prices, and you'll have safari parks more for yourself. It also means you may see some less animals, but more lush vegetation.

Summing it up, I think Kenya is really an all-year-round destination (as it has no summers or winters, but hot weather all year long), and it depends on your personal preferences when you want to go.

good luck,
Arjen
