by Makayla Kelly
(Australia, Queensland)

I am doing an asignment on Kenya. I basically have to act as i am a travel agent trying to sell the country and make a person travel to kenya.
one of the questions is: Discuss the cost of standard expenses in local currency and Australian dollars (e.g. a meal, a taxi from the airport). Can you please help me? Many thanks in advance.

expenses in Kenya NEW
by: Irene O

I have been organising holidays to Kenya for 10 years and always knew the prices of the local facilities. I still need to know them nowadays cause of my work.

There are different travellers as you know. We have the budget travellers, the mid range and the luxury ones.. on top even the top notch travellers... but the services for transfers, taxi's are the same.
One way airport to Nairobi city centre, average between 1500 - 2000 ksh.
Mombasa airport to North coast hotels average 2500 ksh to South coast approx 4000 ksh.
Taxi's are a bit cheaper comparing to our prices here in Europe.

Meals: as Arjen said you can get a meal in a local restaurant for 100 ksh but that is not what everyone would eat.. There are only a few restaurants where cheap meals are served where I would eat. Cause if you could see the kitchen you would skip most of the restaurants..

Most of the tourist to eat in known restaurants whereby the price shows already that the quality of the meals is different. Hotel meals are good, and cost approx starting from 500 ksh. Restaurants like Carnivore, Karen Blixen, Tamarind, Moorings, Monsoon, are excellent for their meals and starts from approx 1000 ksh..

Excursions for tourist doing dhow trips, visiting local villages, city tour.. all of them quoted in usd or euro's and start from would say approx 50 usd..

In my opinion Kenya offers a holiday for low budget holidays makers as well as the top notch luxury travellers.. it is all what you want to pay for that is what you get..

Hope this information helps you

Kind regards
Irene O.

Kenya expensive? NEW
by: Arjen (webmaster)

hi Makayla,

the question how expensive Kenya is, depends where you shop. The Kenyans buy groceries on markets or small street stalls, where they are cheaper. The Western tourists or the Kenyan upper class buy groceries at the supermarkets which are much more expensive. A meal in an eaterie can be had for 100 KSH at the bottom, while its over 1000 KSH at the top end. Taxi fares start at around KSH 300 and a taxi trip from Nairobi to the national air port (Jomo Kenyatta) is about KSH 1000-1500. One Australian dollar is about 100 KSH at this moment, so...

I hope this helps,
Arjen
