Is adoption possible for expat living in Kenya?

by Maya
(Nairobi)

We are an expat couple living in Kenya and would like to adopt a Kenyan child. We already have one adoptive child from our home country. Does anybody know if it´s possible for a foreigner living in Kenya to adopt a Kenyan child?

Adoption in Kenya
by: Archie [Moderator]

Maya,

Thankyou so much for your mail and also to the other contributors for their replies.

Can I just echo Cassandra's reply and let you know that all of us here are 100percent behind you in your efforts.

Nicole has proffered New Life Home Trust in Nairobi as a way forward. I have to agree with her, especially as they have 25 years experience of adoption in Kenya and the backing of a worldwide organsisation.

Clive and Mary would be happy to answer your questions if you want to contact them and let me ask you to keep in touch as I may be in the same position as yourselves very soon and may have to ask you questions.

Kind Regards

Archie

When my husband and I looked into it around 5 years ago the information I was given was that Kenya discouraged interracial adoptions. You don't mention your race, but if you are not black, things may have changed since then. Since you live there, the months of having to stay in Kenya before the adoption will be finalized won't be an issue.

I believe so....

Hello,
Well congrats for wanting to adopt. I know some Americans that lived in Kenya for a few years and they did adopt a Kenyan little boy. From my understanding it is possible. I know for non-resident there is a period of time you much be living in Kenya for the adoption to be completed but because you are living there not I think that counts. This is from what I know about through friends. I can not say I am 100% on the topic and I am not sure if any laws have not changed.

My best advise is talk to people you know in Kenya. Ask if they know anyone going through the process now or someone that is thinking just like you. You can talk to them if they have or have someone to walk with if they are wanting to as well.

Best of luck. I know many children in Kenya that need loving homes so my hats off to you for wanting to be that loving home.
