African Masks
by: Anonymous

People think that masks are used as a disguise, or a costume, like on Halloween. But Africans wore their masks in ceremonies. African masks are considered amongst the finest creations in the art world and are highly sought after by art collectors.
African masks were a very important part of the African Culture, although masks are a lot less common now, than they were in earlier times. In Africa masks can be traced back to well past Paleolithic times. These art objects were, and are still made of various materials, included are leather, metal, fabric and various types of wood.

African Mask
by: Irene O

I think these days most of the masks, if we talk about the wood carved ones, are made to sell to Tourists. many tourists buy them as decoration.

In the past the masks were used for traditional rituals.

I hope of our Kenyan readers can tell us more about masks.

Kind regards Irene O.

Children, Masks and Elders
by: John

Children are probably the Best Actors.
Give them a Uniform or a new outfit and they can
play 'make believe'. "I am a 'Doctor' or a 'Nurse', a 'Soccer player', or a 'Movie Star'".

Masks and Costume perform a similar role in Ceremonies and Rituals. The difference is they carry the significance of the rituals, dances, ceremonies Through Time-
-often hundreds of years.
It can represent the collective wisdom of elders
and often the 'evocation' of spirits.

In Europe and the West world we often think of
masks and elaborate jewelry and costumes as 'art'.

However there is a Story somewhere in the distant past, behind each mask and dance and ceremony.
whether its a ceremonial circumcision, becoming a warrior, or an adult it is part of knowing who we are.
