How cheap are things in kenya?

by Visitor from UK

I just wondered how cheap/expensive things are in Kenya? How much would you expect to pay for a 3 course meal in British Pounds?

Is it advisable to have all Kenyan currency or should we bring US Dollars/British Pounds to exchange while we are out there?

If you could help that would be great. I need to buy my currency soon and I don't know how much I will realistically need for a 12 day stay when I'm in an all inclusive resort in Diani Beach. Many thanks in advance.

Dollars/Pounds or Ksh.
by: Archie Melrose

Thanks for your mail and let me see if I can help.

1. I normally pay around 800ksh for a night time buffet style dinner [eat as much as you want] which includes soup / main courses / dessert. That works out about 6-7 GBP each.

2. Being as you are in 'all inclusive' then you dont need a lot of KSH. Within the compound you may need to use dollars or travellers cheques. If you go out shopping or safari then dollars are king.

3. Its hard to work out how much you need for 12 days as you may have more than one person with you.

Hope this helps

Archie

Are things Expensive in Kenya?
by: John Lambert

Hi,
I hope you will enjoy your visit.
As a general rule services are Cheap and Products are not.
You must barter for products. Pay what seems fair to you.
Meals can run from 200-1200 Shillings
You don't need a lot of cash but take a debit,
credit card probably the cheapest way to exchange currencies
The farther you go away from the more commercial parts of Kenya the more you will need cash and shillings.
