How can i live and work in Kenya?

by Ana Gonzalez
(Leeds, West Yorkshire)

I'm 22, learning Kiswahili and im from england. I have been round Kenya and Tanzania and want to live there as I find the people, culture, Africa amazing and feels more like home. Is it possible to get jobs and work for a female British citizen?

to live and stay in Kenya or Tanzania NEW
by: Irene O

Dear Ana,

Please read my comment to the post 'changing tourist visa into working permit...

I can understand how you would love to stay in Africa. Once been there you never forget. I came to Kenya for the first time in 1994. Since I returned about 30 times whereby I also lived and worked there for some years.

Getting a job is not that easy. As you can read in my comment to the above post. If you could financially support yourself for a while then you could volunteer in Kenya or Tanzania to know the countries better and get time to look for a job.

I wish you all the best and hope you succeed to archieve your dream.

Kind regards
Irene O.

Working in Kenya NEW
by: Arjen (webmaster)

From what I know, like elsewhere, if a Kenyan can be found to do the job,

One area that is relatively to work is intergovernmental and international organisations and NGOs. Nairobi has one of 4 United Nationals international headquarters and a lot of NGOs work in Kenya.

I'm not sure if being higher educated in general is enough to land a job in Kenya. I spoke to many Kenyans who were well educated (e.g. in computer science, biology or mechanics) but 'had' to work under their level to support themselves.
