How big is Masai Mara?

by Emma James
(Yorkshire)

I'm wondering how big Masai Mara national reserve is?

Is it doable to take 8 and 9 years old kids there?

You can see for miles...just keep the children in sight.

Masai Mara is approx 1500 sq. km. --
the northern tip of the serengeti plains.
Big enough that you can't 'take it all in' in a week.

Yes, children can go. Most lodges offer 50% off fees for children. (You still have to pay full price.) Fees into the park are $60 adult and $30 children. Fees may be included depending on your lodging arrangements.

There are many nice lodges where you can stay.
(I would look for one that has a pool and other planned activities -game drive, visit massai village etc.)

Generally the farther west you go into the park the less crowded. i.e the farther from Nairobi.

Malaria is a risk- take anti malarials. and mosquito repellent...check with your GP.
for innoculations for the children etc.

Regards, John
