Hippo in Lake Victoria at Night

by Anonymous

The night was dark and chilly. I and my cousin decided to go into the lake with a boat. Thoughts of hippos started crossing my mind then something caught my eyes.

I think I saw a hippo right besides us, about five meters away. Well,I had heard before of this animal in Lake Victoria but had never seen one before. I could see it smashing our wooden boat, then coming after us,oh no!

My hands did a great deal of puddling. Have you
ever been scared by something you longed to see or experience? Try it at night in Lake Victoria, but you will be relieved when you mistake a stone for a hippo just as mine was.

Take care!

by: Arjen (webmaster)

Thanks for your story. And you make an important point. Many people seem to think hippos are these big, fat, friendly creatures, but in reality hippos are very agressive, hostile to humans and indeed, they often attack humans and boats. They are among the most dangerous animals to be found in Kenya. A full-grown hippo typically weighs between 1,500–1,800 kg (3,300–4,000 lb). So stay away from them...
