Finding a job in Kenya?

by Megan
(Australia)

I am wondering if anyone knows how to find a job in Kenya from abroad.

I live in Australia and I would like to experience Kenya as well as work there. I have a design degree and I'm not sure how useful that would be in Africa.

Any suggestions, or websites? Many thanks.

Working in Kenya
by: Archie [Moderator]

Thankyou for all of your questions and I guess its time to draw a line.

Megan
You submitted the same question way back in January and our team tried to help you. Perhaps you did not read the extensive replies to help you with your desires.

John
Your reply was on the line and yes its time for our job hunters to get busy and buy some good footwear.

Beauty Therapists
I can walk down Kenyatta Avenue, Nakuru and find every other shop is either mobile phone or beauty therapist. The Universities are full of ladies qualifying as Beauty Therapists. Its a hot area for the ladies in Kenya and they enjoy looking good. Unless you have some magic potion to reverse ageing then you are out of luck. To reinforce my point, Kenya is not some African backwater that is out of touch with reality....it is a vibrant country with its ups and downs but it maintains a quality of life that is the envy of others.

Ok I am off my horse and wish you the best

Archie

Scam...Jim Austin
by: samson. samutahi@gmail.com

Thank you Arjen. I think here in Kenya we have so many of such characters and so we don't just give money like that. I love Kenya and Kenyans coz there is unity. All the same we are on our toes.

Scam
by: Arjen Koopman (webmaster)

Dear all,

A person named Jim Austin posted here, offering jobs in a London hotel, using the email address vacancy.department@yahoo.co.uk

This is a scam (I checked with the hotel).

Be careful with people who ask for money when promising that they can get you some job.

best wishes

Fabric and Textile Designs
by: Archie Melrose

Megan

Thankyou from me and the rest of the moderators on this website. I wish you will on your journey and I am sure I speak for the rest of us Kenya lovers.

I would like you to do some research on the word 'kanga' and when you pop it into your search box you will get an idea of what is produced and expected in this part of the world. A Kanga is a very important piece of womens clothing and can be adapted for many uses. Daywear, evening or working wear it is the essential for women who are not in the city. Bright and meaningful with stitched proverbs along the lower hem it is the ultimate statement. I say this from experience as my fiance met me at the airport with a 2 piece kanga with the words 'God is my Strength' along its hem.

Take your time and look at some of the tribal illustrations to give you an idea of your way forward.

Kind Regards

Archie

All your wonderful feedback
by: Megan

Hi to you all,

Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedules to respond to my query. Yes there is a lot of planning that i need to do having not travelled to Africa i thought i could just walk in and it would be sweet but as you have all advised, to make sure i am not disappointed it would be prudent of me to plan.

As for my design qualifications i am a textile designer having worked as a fashion & accessories buyer for major retailers in Australia so i have great experience for the western world its just trying to see if these skills are transferable in Africa. I guess i could freelance in graphic / web design as i have not heard of a fashion industry in Kenya and the idea of coming and then setting up a company might be a way to do this.

Anyway thanks again for your comments, i have lots to research as it is a big step to travel to exotic places as well as earn a living so you can climb Kilimanjaro or go on safari etc.

If you wish to leave further comments please do so as i will check back.

THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH :-)

Working in Kenya
by: Irene O.

Dear Megan,
I have been living and working in Kenya for some years. Before you decide to live in Kenya it is important to stay there for a longer period of time to experience the life in Kenya. And if you want to maintain the life standard you are used to you need a job.. and to find a job whereby you can afford to have a good life you need to get prepared well. Like mentioned in the previous emails the Kenyan Government prefers to give out jobs to their own citizens which is of course understandable. If you are lukcy to find a company to employ you they can assist with the working permit. To apply for a working permit you need patience. It can takes months to obtain one. The cost depends in which category you need a permit for. Fees are about 50.000 to 200.000 ksh per two years. If you cant find a company to employ you you could considder to work indepedent and invest. Then you could register a company with a local person and get a working permit. You must know the channels to work and live in Kenya. It is a beautiful country but it is recommended to prepare well not to be disappointed. If you have more specific questions we are happy to answer them. Good luck Irene

What kind of job?
by: John

Hi Megan,

I'd like to add to Cassandra's and Archie's comments.

First clarify exactly what your design skills are. Is it graphic design, architecture, interior design?

Then what GROUP of people do you want to serve? The tourist industry where hotels may need your services, or safari tour companies who may need brochures or web design?

If you want to work for a non-profit you would need to find a large one (e.g. World Vision - they post job opening on their website) and another option would be to ask your network of friends if they would make monthly donations to you.

After you've answered these questions and looked around a bit more, have something specific in mind, and have some contacts and definite plans you can as Archie says "Put on your walking Shoes".

Best Regards, John

Treading a fine line
by: Archie Melrose

Megan, so happy to have your question and please let me add to Cassandra's input. At the risk of being 'boring' you have to remember that the Kenyan Government have a policy which encourages their own citizens to achieve excellence in all fields of industry.

I am sure you will find on the web the requirements of a Kenyan sponsor which clearly states that if they cannot find the skills locally then they would choose an applicant from abroad. Amongst other things the sponsor then has to set in place a training programme which would involve you training a Kenyan citizen in your area of work. Now I am not experienced in how this works but I can see ahead of time that this is a grey area.

Now do not let me put you off because Kenya needs all of us to give our best. I know from personal experience that Doctors, Dentists, Rectors and the rapidly improving IT network are second to none. Universities are full, the education system is superb and there are so many brilliant students on their way.

My suggestions would be this - Investigate current design services available in Kenya [Nairobi] - Determine the market - Is there a niche for your talents - Bite the bullet and take your portfolio and good walking shoes to Nairobi.

Hope this helps

Regards

Archie

Job Info
by: Cassandra Marie

Hello,
If you are looking for a a specific job I know that there are many postings on this website "best jobs kenya". Also this second one "work in kenya" has many too but I have not used that much so I can not really tell you how effective it is. The two websites that post jobs are posted by employers in Kenya seeking to fill the jobs. Because they are posted by the employer I can not say how accurate they are. But it never hurts to look and email. http://www.bestjobskenya.com/ and http://www.jobsabroad.com/Kenya.cfm

In my opinion the best way to get a job is by networking. If you know someone in Kenya let them know you are looking for a job. Tell them what education you have but also what you enjoy doing. They may know of someone needing a person with your education, passion, or both.

Also there is a hidden job market all over the world, the non-porift sector. This could be could be a match for you. If you would like to work with a group that shares your beliefs , typically Christian you could find a job in Kenya. There are many non-profits working and starting up in Kenya. They operate in a wide capacity. Some are orphanages, other dig wells, and some are education centers or health clinics. All of the non-profits will have a base and some form of staff. If the non-profit is something you think might be a match there are some links.

Best of luck to you! Kenya is an amazing country!
