Driving yourself from Nairobi to Malindi?

by Elizabeth
(Kisii, Kenya)

I read that it's unsafe to drive from Malindi to Lamu but what about Nairobi to Malindi?

Is it safe and how long will it take? I live in Kisiiland.

Many thanks.

Driving yourself from Nairobi to Malindi?
by: Tropic Tours & Travel

Hello Elizabeth,

You can drive from Malindi to Lamu but you will need an escort to the Mkowe area whereby you will take a boat ride to the Island.

I also agree with option by Archie Melrose.

However you can drive from Kisii to Nairobi and take a flight from Wilson Airport to Lamu. Airkenya do fly and depart Nairobi at 1400hrs to Lamu at 1510hrs - fare is $185 per person one way.

Hope this will assist.

Kisii - Nairobi - Mombasa - Malindi - Lamu
by: Archie Melrose

Elizabeth,

Thanks for your mail - here are some distances/times

Kisii to Nairobi 4hrs / 309 km
Nairobi to Mombasa 7hrs / 487 km
Mombasa to Malindi 2hrs / 120 km
Malindi to Lamu Ferry 4hrs - then ferry to Lamu.

If it was me I would get to Mombasa, leave car somewhere safe and then bus to Malindi then take Fly540 flight to Lamu [40 dollars one way]. This would be the safest and quickest option as the Malindi - Lamu road and security is not good.

Here are some links to help you

You can type in your own towns and cities in the box and ask for distance or travel time by road.

FLY 540

I have used them from Nairobi to Mombasa and no complaints.

Hope this helps
