Can we see big game animals such as lions in November in Kenya?

by Jayne Steel
(UK)

In November we plan to stay in Mombasa by the beach and do a safari from there. Do you think it is possible to see the big five animals such as lions in November in the Kenyan national parks?

Lions in November?
by: Archie [Moderator]

Jayne,

Thanks for your question. I am so sorry to report that all the lions take their vacations in November. During the middle of the year they hunt and eat as much as they can, normally the smaller gazelle and occasionally the wildebeest. This helps them put on weight to survive the journeys to wildlife parks in Europe and circuses all over the world.

Around the end of October all the lions are rounded up and shipped. After a few months they are then taken back and released into the wild.
I hear that BA and KLM are offering special rates for Lions and Cheetahs over the festive period.
Virgin have decided to make an extended aircraft which will allow giraffes to travel in comfort.

However do not let this disappoint your plans for a safari, you can always see hyrax [which have an interesting geneology], red ants and there are always the hippos who remain in Kenya. Something to do with excess baggage.

Arjen [webmaster] will probably ban me from replying to any questions but its good to have a sense of humour.

Jayne, you will undoubtedly see all the animals you desire to see and the guides on the safaris know exactly where to go. They have radio contact with all of the other vehicles within Tsavo [thats the nearest to Mombasa] and the lions will be there.

Happy Travels

Archie
