Can a Kenyan man and an American women have a marriage without cultural problems?

Hi, I am an American woman who is engaged to an Kenyan man. So far our relationship is great. But what are the odds of a Kenyan man and an American woman who get married? Will the different cultures create a problem? Will our cultures eventually clash? Thanks for any feedback you can give me on this.

I have been with a Kenyan man for 6 years, married for 4 years, we have 2 children. All I can say you cannot define a person by his origin, especially when you say Kenyan you may add that Kenya is big and there are 42 tribes in it. All men are different. My one is hard-working and loyal, but there are some lazy buddies out there. One thing, my husband craves for going back to Kenya and I am afraid this will win over me one day. I am not ready to drop everything and leave with him from where I am settled. I did not anticipate this before getting married. I am from Eastern Europe and I don't have such attachment to my own home country.

hi, my name is "Lynn". I am an American woman from Tennessee. My husband is from Kenya, Africa. We have been married for a year now. It is difficult bc of how we American women think of ourselves (independent). He thinks women are not as smart, strong, and definitely should not make more money than men. He is okay with me working, but on top of fulltime AND parttime job, i cook and clean. It is hard. Things like how men can do whatever but the woman must ask for permission that is if it allowed. He looks thru my phone occasionally and once...just once, i picked his up to just be nosy and he flipped the script. He can stay out till morning drinking with is buddies but i have to ask for permission to even go to the store in the day time. It is def hard. But you put up with it all to be with the one you love. And i love him dearly. He is my world. and one thing i know though is he loves hard. He doesnt believe in divorce. you know when you think of the future and how it is gonna be? Well, ive asked exes before someting like " where do you see yourself in ten yrs?" and needless to say the answer was always about himself: "in a bmw with lotsa cash man!" ugh. Well i ask my husband that and he said " coming home from work in a suit and seeing you (referring to me) in the yard playing with the kids!" he is something. He means more to me than a cultural problem. I married him so i took his last name and is culture with it. And it is worth it. I know in my heart I will be in love with this man till the day I die and we will be together until then too.

I have worked beside kenyans both male and female and i personally dont see people by color etc..however i have dated a mqn from kenya and would give him anything that will make him happy as long as he shows he is happy with me but sad to say i am not even sure where i stand in his heart if i am in his heart..alls i know is im in love with him but he wont allow me to love him and he acts very secretive and im still yet i guess living on dreams that maybe he really does love me but mybe he is afraid of what can happen or what other people may think im not sure i just wish i knew what to do..in all..a heart is a heart no matter american..kenyan..etc..and they can all be broken

Well, I am a Kenyan, I will give you my opinion as a Kenyan and I hope it helps.

Kenyan men are arrogant sometimes, ego-driven, some are lazy, etc. You can find all bad traits in a Kenyan man. However, they are also kind, good hearted, hardworking, driven by morals etc.

Let's just say it depends on who you meet. I have dated all kinds of Kenyan men so I know, they are just as bad as they are good. At the end of the day, they are all individuals who are totally different.

Maybe one thing that is common to all Kenyan men is that most love education and want to get to the highest education levels they can, most are stubborn, they stare at any beautiful girl they see anywhere but that doesn't mean they are being unfaithful they just like staring at anything good.

At the end of the day, IT DEPENDS ON THE ONE YOU ARE WITH, if he is good then he is good and vice versa.

Don't listen to all the negative things that people is saying against Kenyan's. I have meet and work in the same company with many of them,and they are very loving and caring people, with some faults like any other person. I have been dating one guy from Nairobi and he is the most caring and fun man that i ever meet,,, I am not white or 200 pounds,,I am actually very petite Latin girl. and I will tell you I dated other guys from different cultures, and no one have loved me and compliment me every single day the way this guy does...

I am married to a Kenyan man. After reading some of the previous comments I believe that it is safe to say that you can not judge Kenyans or any other ethnic group as a whole. My husband is an extremely good husband, father, and Christian. He works very hard as an American soldier (yes, Kenyan citizens can join the U.S. military) to support our family. His family is very accepting and supportive of our marriage. Of course we have many cultural differences but if you truly love someone you learn to work through them and compromise for the good of all involved. All of the Kenyan men that I have met have truly been good kind hearted people.

They seem perfect, even godly, up until the wedding, or until they can get out of Kenya. then, they hide it no more, they become abusive, and unloving. Impressing them just because they are now in America. Do not be fooled. Even "pastors" or "christian leaders" are eager to flee from the cursed poverty the live. I dont think my fiancee is PERFECT. Our relationship is great. Some people have had bad experiences with Kenyans but I havent. So until that time comes, Ill continue to be PROUD and HAPPY...

I really don't get what the big deal is for a gal to dream of a man who will treat her like a lady! Our kenyan men go to work by 5.00 am in the morning and come back home after 10.00 or 11.00 Pm! is it because they all expect to be conned or that have lost all faith in humanity,
i never met and africa or anyone fromn undeveloped country that would part with a cent,

I appreciate all the comments that I have read. I am still studying the Kenyan culture as well as learning the language. I dont know what the future holds for me and my Kenyan but for the last 14 months its been great. There are men in each culture that has done horrific things to women. I am an American and you see on the news daily how bad things are in some states so I cant Judge the Kenyans on things that has happened. All I can do is to stay focused on my relationship. As I stated when I first started this blog, my fiancee and I were FRIENDS first and had no intentions on dating. We both work for an American company in which we BOTH had to obtain a SECRET SECURITY Clearance. He has been with the company going on 6 years now so if he is faking about who he really is then he has fooled a lot of people including the company we work for.
For the ones that has had a bad experience with Kenyans, have you dated people from other cultures if so how was that experience? Also it seems like there are some LOW self-esteem issues going on.

But with therapy and God I have let it go, I have forgiven him and his friends, I have moved on.But God had this happen to me for a reason, my Pastor said. It was to tell so others (men & women could learn). He scared more than broke my heart but yes, that did happen too. He told me, hey, you really trusted me. I got you to trust me. See how good I am at playing mind games. ...the Kenyan women are are empowered asked her to record what happened on a video for proof in case she died. Once again, You Tube has it. When the reporters and police asked him about it. He 1st denied it ever happened. But they had proof. Blood on his shirt. He finally fessed up and said he had bought her, yes, just 1 drink, but she shouldn't have took it if she did want him. I've written on this site before, currently I have been in contact with a Kenyan man and we seem to get along well and have daily contact. He is coming to visit me in London UK in September, so I suppose the real test is when we meet and spend time together. I have found it interesting to read some of the accounts good and bad, posted on here. It has made me use my head instead of letting my heart run away with my emotions. Im sorry for people who have experienced a difficult, painfull time. I have also experienced abuse and pain with an Ex who was British....and suffered heart ache when other relationships ended. I have found that you must be true to yourself, have confidence and expect to be treaded with respect and visa versa. Slept in one of his 20 friends houses. They could never find him to serve him! He is still stalking me. He called me just last nite 2x. Some nights, it's 8 times. I never answer. He will leave cigarettes around my yard and water bottles. It has been 3 months and he still harrasses me. Be more careful. I found out thru him, that 40% of my apt 200 unit apt complex have Kenyans. I have met at least 25 of them. It is no lie. They watch me and call him and tell him what I am doing. He said if he ever sees another man take me home he doesn't know what he will do, but he know he will lose his mind! He drinks at least 6 beers w vodka in the same glass, every single day. He uses drugs. HOW did I not know you say? Because in the beginning he never did it in front of me and would talk so bad about men who drank. The greatest con. He told me Kenyans were number 1 at scamming and that He liked it that way. He has over 160 facebook friends, Russian, Kenyan, Mexican girls etc. ON my birtday he text his Russian girl-who dumped him saying he didn't make enuf money-and asked her to meet him in a hotel. The Catholic Church paid for his ticket and student visa. He was 2 years away from taking the vows but once he got here, he had left the church after only 3 months. The Catholic church reported to immigrations for falseness and misrepresentation. They didn't even know he had changed his name and birthdate. The tribes stick together, he is Kikuyu, they found him is low-esteemed wife and paid his bail. He proposed marriage. He did not want me to work but told everyone he did. But he broke my printer on the day I was to have an interview. Could not take a resume. He put super glue in my car lock so I couldn't go anywhere. He threatened to beat me when I told him to get out and I was going to continue my independent life. He told me he could do 7 years for killing me, go back home to Kenya and nobody would know back home, he would start a new life, so he really didn't care. One time I came home from the 1st day on the job and his best friend had been wearing my houseshoes! The tribe will lie, cheat and steal for each other. When I wourld try to leave again and again, they would all come to my door and say how he loved me, he slept in the van, etc. In his crazy way, he did. But I mean crazy. He slept with his best friend and his wife. Yes! And he convinced me to be friends with her before I found out. How convenient. They believe in Voodoo. She had put her toenails under my door mat. I taped them to a paper and dated it for the courts. They then tried to kill me by poisoning. They put something in my drinking water bottle. I threw up for 3 days. When I kicked him out (by being nice-you can never be too mean) he took the trash can that I had gotten sick in and threw it into the dumpster. So there would be no evidence. I went to the autorities and got a restraing order. or at least tired. The authorities believed they tried to kill me but he kept moving around, he changed his job.

I gave him $300. 1/2. He had me call around for attorneys. Do you know what I found out when I went on the internet and did a thorough search. ( I had done the search before and not so much came up. After we broke up, he told me he had the visa, laughed at me in front of my face and told me that adulturous affairs in Kenya was better than American ways because at least he would never be divorced.! Let me tell you the absolute truth. My kenyan boyfriend of nearly a year. Only moved on me to cover his gayness. Yes, he was gay. His boyfriend, his best friend lived 2 blocks away. In Kenya, homosexulaity is seriously not allowed. I am telling you that there was no way I knew. I asked him point blank and he would yell and scream, no it was a sin in the bible etc. He went to church every Sunday or so I was told, and was even on 3 church boards. Then a woman walked in on them. He had moved in with me because he told me he was from Kenya and had no friends and that he was going to be homeless. I offered him my place for 1 month till he found his own. He stayed here 6 months. He would not leave!!! I would kick him out and had a key. One night he kicked the door in. He had at least 20 other women. He told me he did not have a visa. He told me he was not married. I found out he was married to a 300 lb white woman who threw dirty diapers in the front yard. ( I like all people, but the Kenyans are fascinated by white women)

Thanks to the Kenyan who posted today. Probably the most intelligent comment so far. Also, keeping God in the relationship and praying together and reading the Bible together is something I agree with. It would be nice if everyone who posts here could keep it clean and on-topic. My Kenyan gentleman friend has shown himself to be godly, thoughtful, intelligent, kind, respectful, and financially responsible as well as tender-hearted and emotionally transparent and open to me. He's not a game player at all. I continue to fall more deeply in love with him and he with me and I've come to the conclusion that I am willing to relocate to Kenya when the Lord shows us that the time has come for that. I'm also willing to deal with what I'm sure will be a considerable adjustment to the culture(s), climate and living conditions. That's what happens when two people find each other and love each other. There will always be some degree of sacrifice one for the other throughout the years.

Am a Kenyan man the best advice i can give you is first go and visit Pokot and see how it is for yourself.If you like it, then move there but if not and you are determined to stay in Kenya then maybe you could find a more neutral place like Nairobi or Mombasa which are by far more developed and have the amenities you are used to.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. I think many of the negative observations could be made of many American men as well. Things continue to develop between me and the man I met in Kenya 2 months ago. He has 3 children from 2 previous relationships (not marriages) who now live with him and his mother. He also supports his sister's 4 kids. It looks like if we were to marry, I'd be the one relocating to Kenya. Does anyone have any insights into what life is like in the Pokot region? I'm not sure precisely where he is, but from what I've read online, parts of Pokot are extremely remote and undeveloped. I respect that he has taken responsibility for his children. I'm not sure what I'd be getting myself into in this situation, but continuing to pray and follow God's leading. Any insights would be appreciated.

One thing that I have learned is they love education and there is a passion for eating the right food. He also a man that beleive in morals.We met online, he lived in North Carolina and I lived in Florida. Thanks everyone for your comments. I have met a lovely Kenyan man from Nairobi. I live in London UK. It was very interesting to read about the cultural differences and the attitudes to woman. Talking to Jo, I can see that cultually the ethics and morals are still very set and old fashioned. For example attitudes to single parents, gay relationships etc. Also the family ethic of caring for each other and expanding families. It reminds me of the UK pre 1960's, which was not all bad. Jo works very hard, long hours, he has his own business. He treats me with love and respect and I feel happier than I should be allowed. Currrently we live in our respective countries, which makes it difficult at the moment....but talk several times a day. We are still developing our relationship but I hope one day that we will be living together. What I hate are so called friends who don't do their homework before they open their mouths. And are so insulting in your best interest or because we care about you. Life is too short, ok think before you jump, but if it makes you feel happy.......

I have been married to a kenyan for a very long time. I stay and put up with his family wanting him to support them over him supporting me and our children, lies, investing back home, stingy with money, and very secrative,non-emotional, drinker. Even after all said I stay; why?" children, beliefs, love, and I have invested so much into him. (papers,school,children,cars,$) Deep down once you understand their ways, I do believe he loves me. You just have to look deep. It's not all bad, good times are really good and make it worth it.

It will depend on your in laws but i think Kenyans have become very open minded with inter cultural marriages. Just talk with your fiancee and try learn some basic things about their specific culture coz Kenya has many tribal groupings and the culture will vary from the tribe. All the best.

Iam ( still) married with a Kenyan man and can tell you alot about it. However out of privacy protection I cant publish all here. But I can give some advice though.

Both of you have to show interest in each other cultures. Communication between you and your partner is very important. Learn about the traditions, the differences, the family traditions, sharing holidays, bring up children, values in life and talk.. talk.. very important.

In any marriage, doesnt matter if inter cultural or not.. communication and respect are most important. It is not the culture only what makes the man or woman. but the mentality of the person on his/her own.

You have to know the back ground and ask him about he thinks of certain issues which are important in your life. An African man is stroung bounded with his family but ones you have your own family then he should give priority to you and your children!

There are indeed differences in African men and Americans or Europeans. I have learned that men in general are not really comfortable when it comes up to talking.. communicating.. but an African man really dont like to talk/ listen about problems..

Indeed many African men dont respect women at all or believe they are only good enough for the kitchen..and to make sure that they ( the men) have a comfortable life. However it is changing these days and the younger generation is different.

African men are more emotionally inbounded.

there will be a number of cultural differences in such marriage:

Men still consider themselves as superior to women in Kenya...if your partner thinks differently, it is likely that his family and friends may think otherwise

Kenyans are group-oriented while Americans are individual-oriented. In group oriented societies, people have some social duties towards their group: your future husband will have to say yes to any relative coming to ask for financial support... sharing things is common for them.

Saving face is very important for Kenyans...might they be wrong, they rather lie than admitting it especially in front of an audience

They may be tempted to spend a lot of money just to show to others that they have a high social status...
