Bofa Beach at Kilifi in Kenya

by Chris
(Hampshire, UK)

Having read Arjen's article about the best beaches on the Kenya Coast, I wondered why there was no mention of Bofa Beach at Kilifi?

Many people from the yachting fraternity moor up at Kilifi Creek and for sure, Kilifi Creek is the centre for some of the major international deep sea fishing competitions.

The reason I believe so few people know about Bofa Beach at Kilifi is that it is on the North side of the creek not dominated by tourist hotels.
There are really very few hotels at Kilifi and one of the best is the new Mnarani Club Resort. This hotel has been recently taken over and the new management have done wonders to the place. Guests rave about it on Tripadvisor. However, it is located on the south side at the mouth of the Kilifi Creek and Bofa Beach is on the North Side. I am amazed that only one hotel is on Bofa beach and that it is not on a par with other hotels. It could be turned around into a 6* because of its location on Bofa Beach.

My friend Anne has lived in Kilifi for over 25 years, having been born in Kenya and she just adores living there.

I actually believe that Bofa Beach is probably the best beach on the Kenya Coast because it is protected by a fantastic coral reef and the beach itself is quite the most unspoilt beach I have seen. It is almost always deserted apart from the people who stay in the beachfront properties along the beach.

The best beaches of Kenya NEW
by: Jane

I think Bofa beach is wonderful place for beach holiday. It is quiet, beautiful and offers many possibilities for watersporsts. We have visited Kenya couple of months ago with Exclusive Villas Kenya http://villasdiani.com/ They offer only exclusive holiday villas in Kenya, however back that time they did not have any property in Bofa beach so we have book stunning beach villa in Diani. It was wonderful! They took us for trip along the Kenyan coast for safari and we have visited Bofa beach as well and I must say I was impressed! We loved that tropical paradise. By know Exclusive villas extended their portfolio and included into their beach destination Mombasa beaches, Malindi and etc and we have planed our next beach holiday to Bofa beach. We will arrive this year in October, any advise where to catch good safari and diving around Bofa beach and what things to do around??

Mwende - Bofa Beach at Kilifi NEW

I am not sure exactly what was intended by this persons comment because I sensed a certain amount of antagonism here. I agree about the turtles, they are a precious species and everything must be done to protect them. As for the rest of the last comment, I consider the post closed.

Well good for you you try to have people come to Kilifi.

Try http://kilificonnection.com and look at the prices :)

As long as they do not shout about and spoil the beach, for there aren't many places left along the coast for the sea turtles to lay there eggs.

Check with Mama Veronica opposite mama Taylor.
and on LOCAL OCEAN TRUST: WATAMU TURTLE WATCH

You are not really helping the orignal Kenyan population than, for mama Taylor is a real Colonial W. called mama Kaburu amongts locals.

Bofa Beach NEW
by: Chris - Achild of Kenya.

Bofa Beach at Kilifi is bounded by a wide coral reef that is one of the most unspoilt along the Kenya Coast. The black tipped reef shark which occupies the waters of most of the Indian Ocean and around Indonesia and New Guinea can be found all along the East coast of Africa all the way up to the Red sea and across to the Maldives. The waters around Kilifi and Watamu are also home to large numbers of Black Marlin, Wahoo and Swordfish. I am not sure where your reader actually spotted the shark and wondered whether it could have been on the South side of Bofa beach and the entrance to Kilifi Creek which is more likely. Could it also have been one of the other more popular species. To my knowledge there have been no sightings along the inner waters of Bofa Beach other than in the open water across the reef. Black tipped reef sharks live off smallfish and crustacians and generally prefer to stay along the reef edge to feed. Young reef sharks prefer sandy flats. They are generally quite timid but like most sharks, can attack when provoked.
My good friend Mama Taylor who has lived in Kilifi for over 25 years and is a deep sea fishing champion says that occasionally sharks have been spotted in the open water beyond Kilifi Creek but she has no knowledge of one being sighted on the shore side of Bofa Beach or of shark attacks.
My view why Bofa Beach is so unlike any of the other beaches along the Kenya Coast is because there are no tourist Hotels along the beach, other than a small one near the entrance to Kilifi Creek on the North Side and Mnarani's on the South side of Kilifi Creek on the corner of the entrance to the creek and the open sea. Most of the properties along Bofa Beach are occupied by local residents who sometimes rent them out to guests.
Kilifi and Bofa Beach have never really attracted tourists because it is too quiet and remote from the main resorts.

The reason why kilifi is quiet is because we have sharks swimming till the shore!!! saw it with my own eyes

Rest assured, the people who we endorse are those who want to come and stay in owners properties. Not hoards of tourists.

Keep it as it is and stop promoting !

We have enough Italians now coming down for Malindi is full. The last thing we need are tourists (and than beach-boys)

THANKS !!!

Thank for your response to my post. My friend Anne Taylor (nee Doyle) lives in Kilifi not far from Bofa Beach and she has helped and advised numerous people who want to come and stay at Kilifi. You may know her as she was born in kenya and has spent all her life there.

Chris,

Thanks for your endorsement and let me tell you your appraisal is great.

I have a small tour company in Kenya and with your recommendation will be sure to point them that way. Your input was good and I am going to carry out some research right now.

Best regards

Archie

by: Irene O

Thank you for this information. I will also definetly visit that beach. Cause Iam organising weddings in Kenya so it could be a perfect spot for people who want to have a beach wedding!

I knew there is a beach in Kilifi but actually never went there. Reading your information I think that it is time to see myself.

Regards Irene

Chris, thanks for the tip. I've heard from others too about Kilifi so one of these days I'll update the page about beaches.

best regards
Arjen
