Washed for the next year.. by: Irene O.
When we lived in Kenya we were ' washed' on the day you had your birthday. Mostly by suprise..you come outside and plently of water splashed over you.
We still do it at the orphanage, even with visitors or our friends. They sometimes dont know what is happening..
It is normal. to get cleaned for the next year..
After that, birthday cake, very sweet, presents and drinks.. Like anywhere else. But it depends where it is.Not everybody celebrates his/her birthday. Especially adults often dont.

Birthday Celebrations by: Archie Melrose

As far as I know its just the same as anywhere else in the world. How do you celebrate birthdays in Philippines?
However in Kenya I have heard of subtle and mysterious differences. If you are a male child between the age of 1 - 5 then you are given a sharp stick as a gift and you have to spear as many cockroaches as you can. Between the ages of 6 - 11 your gift will be 2 sharp sticks. Above that you get given a bug spray.
The older generation dont celebrate birthdays as such. However there are many birthday card shops with an extensive variety of roses on the outside, inside and back pages. Most of these cards are produced in China and the translations into English can be interesting and funny.
On a more serious note, birthday cakes, candles and presents are quite normal.
