Best US denomination to exchange to KSH?

by Laurel
(Pittsburgh)

Some sites warn against using $100 bills to exchange for Kenyan Shillings due to concerns in Kenya about counterfeiting. Other sites encourage larger bills to get a better rate. Any ideas which is best?

Use ATMs
by: Arjen (webmaster)

Hi Laurel,

I would suggest getting your Kenyan Shillings from an ATM after arrival. Many banks have ATMs where you can withdraw KSH from your own bank account. You will get KSH from the ATM and the corresponding amount in dollars (or whatever your local currenty) will be deducted from your bank account. This is the quickest and usually the cheapest option.

Kenyan Shillings

Laurel,

Thanks for your question. Peter is well up to date with his answer.

Prior to some of my trips to Kenya I have gone into a Western Union office here in Scotland and txferred funds [3 day collection] to myself to be collected in Kenya. OK the xchange rate may not be the best and there will a small charge for the txfer but at least you know there are KSH waiting for you at the other end.

Good Travels

Archie

Best US denomination to exchange to KSH?

Dear Laurel,

There is no cause of alarm using the $100 bills in Kenya - provided they are geniune then there should be no problem at all.

If you use $100 & $50 bills you will get a higher exachnage rate, unlike the $20 & $10 bills that get a lower exchange rate.

Hope that assists

Rgds

Peter.
