by Natalie Underwood
(London, UK)

What is in your personal opinion the best tour or activity to experience in Mombasa, Kenya?

I would like to use your reaction in an article for M Magazine, the inflight magazine from the Dutch airline Martinair, which is a part of KLM.

Lets Go for a Walk...
by: John Lambert

Some of the best vacations my wife and I and later (with kids) have been on have been going places where we could walk.

We could walk to the beach and take a leisurely stroll at our own pace... or walk to little shops and stores to see the trinkets, little gifts, the hand crafted work of the local artisans as well as the historic sites.

Take your time...no rush.

So I favor walking tours. and I second Irene's and Arjen's recommendations... and also see Archie's post here:

best tour or activity in Mombasa
by: Irene O.

When I lived in Kenya and during one of my numerous trips to Kenya I have visited most of the activities in and near Mombasa.

As Arjen said, visiting the Old town which has a lot of Arabic influence that was impressing.. the small streets around Fort Jesus.
The shops were they sell beautiful golden jewelry, the market 'Marikiti'.
To see the ferry at Likoni crossing with hundreds of people from the mainland to the Island.

Mamba village in Nyali closed to Mombasa town. where thousands of crocodiles ment for food and other purposes. There is one crocodile with the name 'Big Daddy 'who has been eating people and now is retiring in 'Mamba Village'.

I loved the dhow trips within the creeks not far from Mombasa especially at sundown.

Visiting Akamba wood carvings fabric where they make beautiful furniture and animals.

There is quite a lot to do in and near Mombasa. What is also very recommended and especially for children an activity with a educational purpose... to visit a local school or orphanage. The children will be very impressed to see how Kenyan children are learning in very poor circumstances or children being orphans living together and sharing all they have...

Regards
Irene O.

Best things to do in Mombasa
by: Arjen Koopman (webmaster)

You should not miss Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. The tour guides around the fortress can also show you around in the beautiful old center of Mombasa, which has a lot of Arab influences due to many centuries of trade and invasions from the Arabs. And of course, the white sand beaches with palm trees that are all around Mombasa.

Please mention Kenya-Advisor.com as the source of your info, will you? :-)
